The Viking’s Wife

The eye burst gently
as it reached
critical temperature
The cheek slid down the face
in that small moment
it was liquid,
before it became charred
and hardened.

Flames breach the hull
In the terror of their own hubris
They were thwarted
The breach of the hull
The flow of the water
Not the almighty conflagration
All flames want
Fire is determined
Entirely by its environment
On a great enough scale
Perhaps all things are

Everyone agreed
She left us too early
All I can think is
She was the last meal
Of an entity
created to eat her
And died before it
could finish the job
I guess she won
I laughed aloud
and heartily
